Why I Created Flash! Fiction: More Than Flash Fiction Prompts

As writers, we’ve all experienced it. We sit down with the best intentions. The notebook is open. The document is waiting. We want to write.
But the ideas don’t come.
Or maybe they do come, but they feel too big. Too complicated. Too unfinished. We spend more time thinking about writing than actually putting words on the page. Over the years, I’ve learned that one of the best ways to overcome this problem is surprisingly simple:
Write something small.
Not every writing session needs to produce a chapter. Not every idea needs to become a novel. Sometimes all we need is a prompt, a challenge, and a few hundred words to get our creativity moving again.
That’s why I created Flash! Fiction.
More Than a Prompt Journal
When I first started planning this workbook, I thought I was creating a collection of flash fiction prompts. But the more I worked on it, the more I realized that writers often need more than ideas. They need guidance, structure, and opportunities to practice specific skills.
Most importantly, they need a way to build confidence one story at a time.
What started as a prompt journal eventually became something much bigger: a creative writing workbook designed to help writers learn, practice, experiment, and grow.
What’s Inside?

Flash! Fiction begins with a foundation in flash fiction and storytelling fundamentals.
From there, writers can explore prompts across multiple genres, including:
- Fantasy
- Science Fiction
- Horror
- Thriller
- Mystery
- Historical Fiction
- Contemporary Fiction
- Comedy
Each prompt includes a focus, a twist, and a challenge designed to stretch creativity while keeping the writing process approachable and fun. The workbook also includes a Skills Lab filled with writing exercises focused on character development, dialogue, conflict, openings, endings, and creative problem-solving.
Finally, one of my favorite sections helps writers take a flash fiction piece they love and expand it into a larger project, whether that’s a short story, novella, or even a novel.
The Most Important Lesson
Throughout my years as both a writer and a writing teacher, I’ve embraced some simple truths.
No writing formula works for everyone.
No rule is absolute.
No technique is universally right.
Writing advice can be incredibly helpful, but the goal isn’t to follow every rule perfectly. The goal is to learn, experiment, adapt, and discover what works for you. That’s a philosophy woven throughout Flash! Fiction. The workbook provides tools, techniques, and challenges, but it also encourages writers to explore their own creative process and develop their own voice.
Why Flash Fiction?
Because small stories are powerful. A single scene can teach pacing. A few hundred words can teach character. A brief story can reveal an idea worth expanding into something much larger.
Flash fiction allows writers to practice storytelling without the pressure of a long-term project. It encourages experimentation, creativity, and momentum. And momentum is often what writers need most.
Your Next Story Starts Here

Whether you’re looking for fresh ideas, trying to overcome writer’s block, building a daily writing habit, or simply looking for a fun creative challenge, my hope is that Flash! Fiction helps you spend less time staring at a blank page and more time creating.
Every great story begins with a spark. You never know which one might become something extraordinary.
