Do you ever find yourself sitting in front of your computer screen, fingers hovering over the keyboard, and your mind completely blank? We’ve all been there – the struggle of wanting to write but having no idea where to start. Don’t worry, because you’re definitely not alone! Luckily, there’s a solution that might just help you break through your writer’s block: story idea generators. These online tools jumpstart your writing, helping those creative juices flow. And in this blog, I’m going to share with you some of my favorite generators. So, whether you’re a seasoned writer or just starting out, keep reading to discover some of the best idea generators out there!
Idea Generator #1: One Stop for Writers
First, let me make it clear that I am in no way affiliated with this website. Honestly, I wish I were. This is my favorite story idea generator as it goes beyond the usual, generic randomizers. It truly is a one-stop for writers. Just check out the list of different tools available in the screenshot above. Unfortunately, after the 14-day free trial, you must pay for a subscription. Still, at $11 a month or $105 a year, I think it’s well worth the money.

Idea Generator #2: Reedsy
Okay, total honesty time. I just love playing with this one. Reedy’s story idea generator is a rabbit hole that I have to be careful of when I fall in. You can select the genre, then get results for characters, plot, and even plot twists. It can give some awesome ideas and some silly ones. But the more you hit random, the more ideas you can get from what pops up. I like to look at what doesn’t work, or seems to silly or serious for me to write. I brainstorm changes, and before I know it, I have a new story idea.

Idea Generator #3: Big Huge Thesaurus
The advantage of Big Huge Thesaurus is the sheer number of possibilities. It’s a great place to go if you just want a prompt to do a quick write, or journal entry, something to shake loose the creativity. Honestly, I use it more as a teacher than a writer. It’s a great place to get random prompt choices. Since it isn’t quite as random as Reedsy, you don’t have to wade through any silliness or prompts that don’t completely make sense.
Idea Generator #4: Masterpiece Generator
Don’t let the picture fool you. These are just eight of the categories you can find on Masterpiece Generator. It presently has over thirty. If you want to play with genres you’ve never explored before, this is a great way to start.
Idea Generator #5: Film Crux
This story idea generator isn’t the best out there, as it is only a small part of the overall website, but I still think it’s fun. The advantage of this on is that you can pick and choose what part of the prompt you want to change. So if you don’t like it at first, keep what you do like and change the rest. Otherwise, it is very similar to the Reedsy generator. Still, Film Crux will help you if you need to get those creative juices flowing.
